Good games for bad video cards

So you all know that I got this new computer recently.

And it's great.

But the onboard graphics (like most) suck. It's enough for productivity stuff, but if you want to play any sort of recent game, you're out of luck. So until I manage to find a decent graphics card with support for the ancient PCI, I've been looking for at least okay games that are playable.

Here's what I've found so far:

BOTS/BoutCheetah Free!
FarCry
Fallout 1
Indie Pixel Games
Runescape Free!

Post any games you've found that work well on older hardware and I'll put it up here.

Re: Good games for bad video cards

BOTS Review

This was a free game I played long ago. It's got no story and mainly features cooperating with the now almost nonexistent userbase to beat up other robots so you can buy upgrades to beat up more robots. Most things cost coins which can be bought with real money. While 8 years ago it may have been teeming with life, now the number of users online and playing at any time has fallen to double digits. You can still get a good game going if you manage to slip into a room between levels, but expect to do a lot of solo levelling right now. I'm not sure there's much point in attempting the PvP modes anymore. Nobody goes in there mainly because nobody's ever there. Minimum requirements are a Pentium 3 equivalent or better, at least 512MB of RAM, and basically any old video card.

5/10 Not bad if you like button mashing alone and runs smoothly on anything. It's free!

Selling points:
- The name isn't stupid.

BoutCheetah Review

Since the last time I played it, it seems it's been acquired by Zylon Gaming. They have another game that looks amazingly similar called BoutCheetah. BoutCheetah has a huge userbase. If you want to play this game, go to BoutCheetah instead. It appears to be a private server that the admins actually care aBout...Cheetah. Ok I'll go now. This game is almost identical to Bots, but with an actual userbase. There are a few differences like the order of levels, but the main differences are updated graphics, and updated user interface, and a stupid name. It's all the button mashing but now with 75% less loneliness!

7/10 Not bad if you like button mashing with people and runs smoothly on anything. It can actually be pretty fun. It's free!

Selling points:
- Small but active userbase
- Nice graphics
- Smooth as silk
- Customization
- Full of people who are happy to tell you to kill yourself so that they can solo the level

FarCry Review

Pretty amazing game so far. This game favors stealth and slow, precise movements over running into every situation, guns blazing. That doesn't mean you can't, it just means that you gon' get ded. Anyway, it's a fairly old game, but still packs some nice looking graphics. Wear headphones. It helps in hearing where the enemies are so you know where to not walk. Try to pick them off one by one.  You can adjust how much detail the game puts into it before you start, which means that you can tune it to run nicely on even an older system. It's a very fun game so far, but I've only just started playing. From what I've seen so far, I'd recommend this game to anyone, not just people stuck on old computers without games.

8/10 Nice game. Doesn't play well with onboard graphics all the time, though. I experienced some low framerates whenever I wasn't inside a building, although it's very smooth while you're inside.

Selling points:
- Pretty graphics
- Hanging meat
- Graphics can be scaled to fit your hardware

Re: Good games for bad video cards

Fallout Review

If your computer is capable of running any version of windows, then you can play this game. Might not work above Windows XP, though. I hear Windows Vista+ dropped support for 16bit programs. But in that case, you can just load up your copy on DOSBox or VirtualBox or something and it will still run smoothly. They're pretty nice post-apocalyptic games about the world following a nuclear world war. Vault-tec is kind of a jerk.

8/10 Fun, but fights can get tedious.

Selling points:
- Runs on anything. Mac, Linux, Windows, whatever. If you have a copy and a computer, there's a way to run it.
- High replay value
- Pretty good graphics for a game from the 90's.

Re: Good games for bad video cards

UPDATE: Changed BOTS Review to BoutCheetah review because it's better in every way except the name which is stupid. The graphics are like 5 times as good but it's still smooth as silk.

Re: Good games for bad video cards

No idea. The "bout" part kinda makes sense because levels are kinda short but there are no cheetahs are cheetah-like objects in the game.

EDIT: Separated the BOTS and BoutCheetah reviews, but they're in the same post.

Indie Pixel Game Review

Almost all of them suck.

3/10 They'd run on a toaster, but you wouldn't want them to.

Selling points:
- There's a few good ones out there.

I don't think you've been playing the right indie pixel games.

Re: Good games for bad video cards

The only indie pixel game I've played was Cave Story and that was pretty good. Cave Story + was bad tho. They screwed up the translation on that one.

Re: Good games for bad video cards

Runescape Review

A fun but repetitive game. Functions well on computers of all ages, although some of the ones on the low end of the spectrum will want to avoid the "Auto-Detect" settings button. Has many skills, world events, and also includes a sort of Stock Market-type global buying and selling of goods. It's been around for a long time, but if you are a big fan of fantasy RPGs you might be able to get over the fact that this game is actually just 100% grinding. Minimum requirements are a 500MHz processor, 128MB RAM, a 64MB graphics card, and the ability to install Java 1.5+.

7/10 Popular game, runs well, but is nothing but grinding with some quests thrown in there to break up the monotony. It's free!

Selling points:
- Graphics can be scaled to fit your hardware.
- Very low requirements.
- Cross-platform
- No downloading
- Massively multiplayer
- Large userbase
