Computer program learns to play NES games

Video Here.

This guy, Tom Murphy, wrote a computer program that randomizes key-presses in an emulated NES game.

The program gets "Happy" when bytes in the RAM go up. It randomizes the keypresses, and then biases the key-presses after each run that made it more happy than the previous best.

It learns how to play Mario, The Karate Kid, Hudson's Adventure Island, Bubble Bobble, and Tetris, with varying levels of success.

This works for any game on the NES, without programming in what makes the program happy. He does provide an input sequence to each of the games in the video, but that's just to "jump start" the program and provide a basis for what makes the program happy, to give you this simulation after weeks of running it instead of months of running it.
