Squares don't really fit the shape. Too much space will be wasted from tall/square headers. Not any bigger than 300 pixels tall and no wider than 700 pixels.

If it means cropping it, I'd say no. Maybe a little off the top and bottom, but other than that, no.
If it means distorting, make sure it's at least remotely proportionate to the original pic.

I don't even think cropping with html is possible. Here's what the code's for.

Blue defines the image itself.
Green basically sizes the image to whatever you want, Which would take less time than to crop it using an image manipulator and THEN add the codes.

The "?" defines the size. So, instead of it being like 500x500 you can do width="200px" height="200px"

I like the Halloween idea. I'd toss out my ideas but they might get a little bit crazy by saying stuff like adding CSS3 animated ghost fly from the bottom of the forum to the top, and left to right, or vice versa.

Quite. Would be done quite easily honestly. I could make it float in from the right and remain on the screen for a moment with a back and forth effect for "realism" and then simply glide off and have it do that infinitely.
