it logs me in, but doesn't save it. it remembers me so that I don't enter info when I press login, but I'm not automatically logged in.

Rat, that's supposed to happen. On certain pages, if you have a cookie, it will be used to log you in. The login page and the Active Topics page both do that.

Then why did this never happen until last week, when before it accepted the cookie on any page I went to like a nice little forum?

Hm. Well, starting today, I've been logged in whenever I've visited. I thought it might be because I visited frequently, but then I took a LOOOONG 5 hour nap, got on, still logged in, then I went hiking with my family, got back an hour or two later, and here I am, logged in.
