Private Schools are Weird

Last time I took the ACT, the classroom I was in was in a private school, and they had some really weird math stuff up on the black board. Stuff like

1+1 = 2 1
2 + 3 = 7
when 1 = 2

I couldn't help but wonder under what circumstances would this ever need to be written.

Quite. The only thing I can think of is that they were doing some sort of number game among themselves after class was over, but that's still pretty weird.

I'm not quite sure they understand what the implications of defining 1=2 are. It would in the very least imply that all rational numbers are equal to each other; I don't feel like determining for sure if that would apply to all real and complex numbers, but it very probably would.

Numbers without math. If you take out the math, I'm pretty sure the numbers are just weird drawings.

It's a lot better than math without numbers. I saw this type of logic puzzle where there were math problems like
CAT
xHAT
FAT

and they gave you A = 8 and you had to figure out what the rest of the numbers were, then see if the problem is true. Those were horrible ._.

Those things have always annoyed me, if you have two letters next to each other in math that means they're supposed to be multiplied by each other.

But when you're doing that it's because they're variables. Here the letter characters are just replacing numeric characters.

Which is the problem, because there isn't really ever a context in which you would actually do that in math.

Nope. But such is the life of puzzle. Which is why I was something if that... thing on the chalk board was a puzzle.
