LaTeX

It's a typesetting language. It's pretty cool. Check it out.

Basically you use it to type scientific documents.

Re: LaTeX

Example of LaTeX markup:

\documentclass[12pt]{article}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\title{\LaTeX}
\date{}
\begin{document}
  \maketitle
  \LaTeX{} is a document preparation system for the \TeX{}
  typesetting program. It offers programmable desktop
  publishing features and extensive facilities for
  automating most aspects of typesetting and desktop
  publishing, including numbering and cross-referencing,
  tables and figures, page layout, bibliographies, and
  much more. \LaTeX{} was originally written in 1984 by
  Leslie Lamport and has become the dominant method for
  using \TeX; few people write in plain \TeX{} anymore.
  The current version is \LaTeXe.

  % This is a comment, not shown in final output.
  % The following shows typesetting power of LaTeX:
  \begin{align}
    E_0 &= mc^2                              \\
    E &= \frac{mc^2}{\sqrt{1-\frac{v^2}{c^2}}}
  \end{align}
\end{document}

Re: LaTeX

Does that actually solve any problems? Seems like it was made to complicate writing down math.

When you're typing complicated mathematics, it's much easier and more efficient than most of the alternatives. For non-math, it can still be useful for having precise control of formatting and for not having to deal with the hassles of a GUI.

Re: LaTeX

How complex of math are we talking about here? I've written some pretty complex formulas on my phone. Check out the Algeo app for android. Does LaTeX look like that?

Re: LaTeX

Pretty much as complex of math as you want. This is what most mathematicians use for typing their journal articles and textbooks and stuff like that. Here's my final project for my math class for this semester, done in LaTeX:

Re: LaTeX

Through my hours of research, I've come to the conclusion that the image above is in Spanish.

Yeah okay I can't do that on my phone.

It's used especially in math, but it (along with other TeX variants) is also used a very large amount in other scientific/academic fields.

I have a joke for you that's semi-relevant.

How many Prolog developers does it take to change a lightbulb?

Yes.
